GAPS Food Journal: Day Nine
I had an interesting realization today. I took my cod liver oil and had an immediate reaction — excess mucus, sneezing, post nasal drip, itchy eyes, nose and throat.
I was like WTF? Why am I reacting to cod liver oil? Then I looked at the label and realized that it’s fermented cod liver oil. Hello! Fermented!
I’m having the same reaction any time I eat anything fermented. Or when I consume probiotics. I guess this is just the temporary die-off reaction.
It makes sense though — what I have going on is definitely bacterial.
Anyway, here’s what I ate today:
Before Breakfast:
1 cup dandelion root tea
2 Biokult
1 glass of water with homeopathic drops (for detoxing) and herbal detox blend
Breakfast:
1 cup organic half-caf coffee, with homemade almond milk (made from soaked and dried almonds, filtered water, raw honey, vanilla extract and sea salt)
3 pieces of Rocky Canyon bacon (organic, nitrate-free, made with honey instead of sugar)
Lunch:
Smoothie made with 1/4 cup coconut milk, 1/2 banana, 4-5 TBS fermented coconut cream (with honey and vanilla), and 3 pastured egg yolks
Dinner:
1 bowl leftover grass-fed chili
1 handful soaked and dried almonds with sea salt
1 handful raisins
2 glasses Trader Joe’s sauvignon blanc
2 Biokult
Iodoral, adrenal gland, cod liver oil and other supplements

Your stamina and resolve to follow this diet is inspiring to me. I’m the most debilitated kind of perfectionist. If I can’t do something *perfectly*, I don’t do it. I like to read that you keep on going even though you haven’t followed the diet to the letter. It reminds me to forgive myself and keep trying.
Do you have a recipe and how-to section? I’d like to read about how you make your beet kvass and roasted duck. I think I’m going to buy a duck at our farmer’s market this weekend.
Thanks for the sharing!

Thank you, Spinner. That is a very nice compliment and I appreciate it. Sometimes it’s hard posting everything up here on this blog — since I get nagged so much for not eating enough.
And yeah, I’m not perfect. But if I tried to be perfect, I would never be able to accomplish anything. I’m not a perfect mother, not perfect at my work, not perfect in my marriage, not a perfect friend or family member. I just try to do my best each day.
The thing is, nobody’s perfect, right? Not being perfect also helps you forgive others when they are less than perfect.
I really need to build a recipe section. The problem with blogs is it is so darn hard to find things. I plan to build one but it may not be until the new year. I am busy right now building the Real Food Media blog network (http://www.realfoodmedia.com).
In the meantime, here’s my roast duck recipe:

I just took some photos of making beet kvass and plan to post about that very soon. However, if you can’t wait, the recipe is in Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon.

One thing to think about if you continue to have such strong reactions to fermented foods (beyond the die-off) period – fermenting things causing msg to occur naturally. If you are super sensitive to MSG this could be a problem for you. Here’s a link to more discussion on the topic. It came up at the conference this year too, I’ve heard. http://onibasu.com/blog/2005/03/lacto-fermentation-bad-for-msg.html

I truely feel that all the reactions are due to a leaky gut. Once that has healed you’ll be fine. I took away the ghee again. I am going to wait til the new year to introduce dairy.
Annie, have you heard dr. mcbride speak of iodine supplementation? I am taking lugol’s, but I know that she is against supplements.
I heard her say that thyroid problems come along with the gut problems and that they heal on thier own.
