GAPS Food Journal: Day Eleven
I think I figured out what is wrong with me. I think I’ve been taking too much Biokult.
It was a total DUH moment this afternoon. Totally obvious — why didn’t I think of this before!
I was fine with 2 Biokult, so I figured I’d do just as well on 4.
So I’m skipping the Biokult tomorrow. And the next day. And I’ll just stay off of it until my symptoms clear up. And then I’ll start back with 1 Biokult and slowly slowly increase the dose.
I’m also not going to eat or drink anything fermented for a few days.
Before Breakfast:
2 Biokult
1 glass of water with homeopathic drops (for detoxing) and herbal detox blend
Breakfast:
2 cups half-caf coffee, with 1 tsp coconut oil
4 pastured eggs, cooked over easy in duck fat
1/2 banana cooked in coconut oil
3 TBS Zukay naturally fermented salsa
Lunch:
5 pieces Applegate Farms organic roasted chicken
After Lunch:
Glass of filtered water with tinctures of elderberry and mullein (for congestion)
1 glass of water
Dinner:
1 bowl butternut squash soup (made with coconut oil, organic onions, organic butternut squash, sea salt, and homemade chicken stock)
1 free-range organic antibiotic-free (not pastured; could not get to the farmer’s market) chicken breast, baked with garlic and olive oil
Salad made with organic greens, organic pea tendrils, organic sprouted lentil beans, organic cucumber, and dressed with olive oil, flax oil, and Balsamic vinegar
Bowl of raw almonds, soaked and dried, and organic raisins
1 glass Trader Joe’s sauvignon blanc
1 glass Trader Joe’s zinfandel
Iodoral, adrenal gland, cod liver oil and other supplements

I hope cutting out the fermented stuff helps. I know any time I have a flare up the yeast just does me right in allergy-wise.
Mullein is wonderful for lung issues, yes. It’s what I use when my asthma flares up, since I can’t use inhalers or steroids at all.

So i’m spending the afternoon reading and i just got to the part about iodine, hum, i’ve been taking SP iodine for a while now, i thought it was a good thing, now i’m totally confused- what do you think?
excerpt from here-
http://www.healingnaturallybybee.com/articles/intro2.php#s25
“Many healthcare practitioners, although well-meaning, treat specific symptoms and disorders, much like doctors do with drugs. They may perscribe extracts to treat the thyroid, adrenal glands, and so on. However this often causes more harm than good. That is because such substances can throw off already delicate hormone balances. Therefore the focus must be on treating the “cause” and not the symptoms. Also, as the body heals and the immune system becomes stronger all of the body’s organs will begin to normalize. However, if you are taking hormones or other nutrients, like iodine for the thyroid, it will throw that organ into a tizzy; so it won’t be able to recover and function normally. Instead its functioning will become extremely irratic and unpredictable.
Most “extra” supplements are totally unnecessary, often causing adverse side effects or they are a waste of money. A good example of this are iodine supplements like Lugol’s, as well as kelp, seaweed and other green supplements. Not only are many green supplements too strong for sick people to handle, often overwhelming the body, but they also contain too much iodine.
Iodine is only required in trace amounts (minute amounts) and all of your body’s requirements can easily be met by eating butter and by taking at least 1 teaspoon of a “good” ocean sea salt per day. The fact is that too much iodine causes just as much damage to the thyroid as too little. “

Sorry, I don’t buy that about the iodine. Iodine is NOT needed in trace amounts by the body. You actually need a minimum of 10 mg of iodine per day for your body just to function. You need more during puberty, if you have large breasts, are pregnant or breastfeeding, have any type of hormonal problems including cysts, fibroids, cancer, or fertility problems. We are all toxic in bromide, which always displaces iodide because it is higher on the periodic table of elements. There is just no way you can meet your bodies iodine needs with a little butter and sea salt. In fact, according to Dr. Janet Lang, sea salt does not contain appreciable amounts of iodine at all. When you start to take iodine, unless you start off with a very small amount, and work your way up, you WILL have uncomfortable detox symptoms. Sick people especially need iodine, but they have to start out small. If you would like my notes from the 2 thyroid and iodine lectures I attended at the WAPF conference, I can email them to you. Or maybe, with Ann Marie’s permission, I should just post them to the forum for eveyone to view under this topic.

Christine-
Thanks for chiming in here, this is all so confusing- so much differing info out there, but I am deff on track to keep taking the iodine and I would love your notes from the conference, thanks for being willing to pass those on! My email is mariaberkbigler@hotmail.com so far I’m taking 27mg per day, I’ve been at that dose for awhile now so I think I’ll look into upping it.

Maria, I read that from bee’s website to. I am as confused as you are. She seems to be very educated and I think we should consider what she is saying. As a matter of fact, in a lecture that Dr. Mcbride gave she was asked about the thyroid and she said that thyroid problems just come along with gut issues and they balance themselves out on their own, same thing bee says. I heard it http://www.greekgiftsetc.com/GAPS/

This is patently wrong.
She’s got a great website but not everything on her website is correct.
I’m going to do a post on iodine right now. Christine, I’m going to use your notes.
Iodine deficiency is such a big issue for most people. I think it’s true that healing the gut will help with absorption of nutrients. However, we do not get enough iodine in our food. On top of that, there are a number of things that block iodine in our food and water supply, including too much soy, bromide in the bread, fluoride, etc. Oh and perchlorate, which is rocket fuel, that they are dumping in the water.
Going to go post now!

Again, as I go over my conference notes, I see that Dr. McBride does say something about this issue. She said that if the gut flora is abnormal, hormone levels are affected (ie. thyroid, adrenal, PMS). She more or less says that hormonal imbalance is a sign of gut dysbiosis. I agree with her, the gut controls just about everything. But, we still need lots of iodine. There are so many parameters controlling our hormones. I guess too, if you have gut dysbiosis, you won’t be able to properly absorb and utilize the iodine or any other nutrient for that matter.

I have to third the iodine information!!
Magnascent is the best!! I use this one and love it.

I was using Iodoral but starting researching and switched to this one. I have heard good reviews about this one too. http://www.wellnessresources.com/products/iosol_iodine.php
And one last recommendation from a company that is AMAZING! Their products have totally revolutionized my health!!

I don’t work for any of these companies…just love the products!
I love Bee’s website and have followed her “diet” for a couple of years. It does not cure all as she seems to think it will. No disrespect meant. Even after eating really well for a long time I knew something was still not right. It turned out I had hypothyroid and was going through menopause (I’m 32!!) Of course having a good clean diet made the symptoms minimal. I’m thin and have energy-not typical hypo symptoms. The Dr. of Chinese Medicine and later a Chiro could not believe I was hypo. I digress..So anyway, with supplements I have reversed all of that. All this to say, iodine is a must. The quality of it is really important too!
Good luck!
