Coffee Stencil I love you

Happy Valentine’s Day! I have been trying to think of some special treats I could whip up for my loved ones this weekend. Instead of a Valentine’s Day gift or flowers, why not show your love with healthy, nourishing, delicious food?

I’ve compiled a list of healthy dessert ideas from some of my favorite blogs.

But before we get to dessert, did you know that oysters are an aphrodisiac? It’s true! Here a few links to a few meals with oysters on my blog:

Raw Oysters with Wild Salmon and Sprouted Salad
Oysters on the Half Shell & Moules a la Mariniere (Mussels in Butter and Cream) – this one tells how to shuck the oysters (although if you go to Whole Foods, they will usually shuck the oysters for you)

Also, here’s a really cute idea from the How to Cook Like Your Grandmother blog: Valentine’s Day Meatloaf Hearts!

And now… here are some ideas for healthy desserts for Valentine’s Day:

Apples & Pears Sautéed in Butter from The Nourished Kitchen
Chocolate Peanut Butter Ice Cream from Passionate Homemaking
Coconut Macaroons from the Thrifty Oreganic
Crème Brule from Kelly the Kitchen Kop
Moist Chocolate Mocha Cake from Adventures in Healthy Cooking
Mounds Candy Bars from The Nourishing Gourmet
Really Raw Vanilla Bean Ice Cream from Hartke is Online!

    hi again!

Hope you’re enjoying Valentine’s day! You gave me a few tips about raw ice cream before and I’ve been perusing your site since then. I’m resurfacing to inquire about kefir this time. We’ve been buying our kefir thus far, but I’m interested in trying my hand at fermenting our own. Do you have a suggestion on a good place to get grains? (sorry if you’ve already mentioned this and I missed it.) I managed to get my kombucha started from a commercial bottle, but it doesn’t look like the same thing can be repeated with kefir.

    Thanks!

Sorry this is a little off topic, but I am curious. I remember reading in one of your posts (energy?) how you do not use a microwave. I am curious what you use and if you have used/heard good/bad about Dr. Mercola’s Turbo Oven? Our microwave caught on fire last night (how many times do you have to tell your 9 year old NOT to put steel in the microwave?). I have been wanting to get rid of it, and now we have to. :) When looking into alternatives, Dr. Mercola talked about his turbo oven. I did some research and see mixed reviews. But it is so hard to tell if someone from the company who makes them is just going around adding comments about how great it is. What do you do to reheat food or do it fast? Thanks!

Oh, Paula, you are so sweet. I’m so touched to have a friend like you all the way in Alaska. :-)

I’m so glad you enjoyed the pots de creme. We had them the other night and you are right — they were heavenly.

Happy Valentine’s Day and much love to you and Steve.

thanks for the pointer. Great site. I will try.
In the meantime, I noticed that you frequent the Santa Monica Farmer’s Market. We’re actually going to be swinging through there soon (hopefully, next Saturday.) Would you mind terribly passing some off in person? I’m willing to trade sourdough starter (my husband started one from organic rye that makes great loaves) and seeds. I have several organic fuji apples that have sprouted, and oranges as well. Unfortunately, it will be years before they fruit, but I’m glad to share. I have a Meyer Lemon as well.

But I also understand that you may not want to meet strangers. Please feel free to say no thanks, i’ll stick with my original plan. I already appreciate all the help and tips you’ve given us.

Oh absolutely! I meet lots of new friends at the farmer’s market. And I have a ton of kefir grains.

I go early — around 8:30. Can you meet me around 8:30 or 9? We usually meet up at the Organic Pastures booth.

I don’t need any sourdough starter but I’ll take you up on the seeds.

Email me and remind me the day before please so I remember to pack the kefir grains!

    Paula -

I’m glad your microwave died. I hate microwaves. They make food taste bad and I think they deform the proteins.

I am not familiar with Dr. Mercola’s oven.

I use a large toaster oven to heat bread and pizza and that sort of thing. For soups, chili, etc. I just warm them up in a pan. For big things I warm them up in the oven.

I don’t miss my microwave at all.

I bought the Turbo oven a few months back hoping it would replace my microwave. I did get rid of the microwave, but I do find that the toaster oven, or the regular oven actually heats up a bit faster than the turbo oven. I rarely use it. If you have an oven, or a toaster oven, I don’t see any need for the turbo oven. I find it takes at least 1/2 hr. + at the highest temp. to heat up one meal, and sometimes it is not even heated all the way through like the oven does. I have made rice in a casserole dish before, and that turned out well, but for re-heating meals, a regular toaster oven works better (and is less expensive).

I also had mixed feelings on getting rid of the microwave. But, as I have learned, it is no big deal. I don’t miss it at all. Sure, you have to wait a little longer for a meal to heat up, but I have so much to do I just do another chore while the food is re-heating. Just plan a little ahead, which is the premise of most NT cooking anyways.
