A while back, I posted about how you can save money on your electric bill by unplugging things around your house.
Shortly after I posted that article, I got an email from Belkin, with an offer to send me their super cool Conserve Surge Protector to test out.
It arrived in the mail and I am so excited to set it up! This is going to make it so easy to turn off all our computers and junk in the office. I’m sure this is really going to reduce our electricity bill.
According to Belkin:
- Most home electronics continue to use energy, even when you’ve turned them off.
- This wasted energy is called “standby power,” which adds up fast and impacts the environment.
- Belkin’s Conserve Energy-Saving Surge Protector makes it easy for you to reduce this standby power.
And check this out:
The California Energy Commission estimates standby power losses in the average household to be as much as 15% of household electricity use.
Say you’re spending $100/month on electricity. By unplugging, you could save as much as $15 per month, or $180 per year. That’s more money you could be saving — or spending on real food!
What I’m most excited about is the remote control. You can just mount it on a wall. Then, at the end of the day, when you’re done working, you can simply push one button and turn off all your computers, printers, fax machines, and what-have-you.
Even better, there are two outlets that are for “always on” devices:
With this handy remote control, you can completely shut off the power to devices that consume standby power, such as TVs or computer monitors, when you are done using them. Two “always-on” outlets allow you to leave devices that typically need to stay on, such as set-top boxes or modems.
This way we can unplug our TV, VCR, Playstation, and Wii when we’re not using them — but leave the Tivo on so it can keep recording our shows.
I love it!!!
Here’s the best news of all: Belkin has offered to give away a free Conserve Power Surge Protector to Cheeseslave readers. All you have to do is enter the contest and you can win a Conserve Power Surge Protector — retail value, $49.99.

i’d love to have one of these for a couple reasons. first, obviously to conserve energy, and to reduce all the emfs around me. and second, just as importantly, to be able to spend that money that i save on life giving foods and green lifestyle. in the past year or so, i have completely turned my eating habits around, after eating the SAD for about 38 years, and even thought it costs a bit more and takes more time in the kitchen, it has been completely worth it, eating non processed, vibrant, nutritionally dense foods, like organic grass fed meat, organic pastured raw dairy, raw fermented CLO, butter oil, organic fruits, veggies, sprouted nuts, grains, and seeds. i’ve been subscribing to cheeseslave for a while and i’m loving it!!!

I would love to win this because ever since your article I’ve been unplugging things around our house and this would make it so much easier, we have saved an average of $50 a month! I live in a 100 year old house, with 100 year old electricity. We always have power surges. This would be great.
02/04/2009 at 9:10 pm Permalink
We have a lot of electronic items plugged in around our TV area but don’t shut the power strip off because the DVR records stuff while we sleep. I know the Wii draws power constantly, so this would be perfect for our entertainment area!

I love everything Belkin, and this surge protector would be awesome for our home office! I hate to leave everything plugged, but I don’t always have time to unplug all of the computers and gadgets that we have, so this will save a lot, both time and money!

I would love to win so we can organize all of our devices in our family room much more efficiently with this Belkin Power Surge Protector with remote control. Right now we have our computer, audio system, gadget, tv, vcr, etc. plugged into various outlets around the room with no protection and having this device will enable us to safely keep them plugged in and make us more organized. Also, another biggie, conserve energy and power usage quickly and easily with the remote, this is genius! Thank you so much for the opportunity to enter.

I would like to win because my husband and I have been unplugging to save electricity for a year now. I would really like a great way to easily unplug out TV setup. I know that the TV area is our last big drain. Winning this plug would take care of that. Thanks.

After you wrote another post about conserving energy by unplugging, I told my husband, and he jumped on the band wagon. But we have another family living with us in our house, and they don’t always turn things off… I wonder if having an easy off button like this would help make it even easier for them to jump on the band wagon.
Thanks for all your superb posts, I love reading your blog!
03/04/2009 at 2:59 pm Permalink
I would like to win this because it seems that I am the only person in the house able to turn anything off. At least this way I could follow behind everyone with the remote and take care of things.

Talk about timing…our public utility raised their rates by just over 5 percent in January and with the cold weather here in the Pacific Northwest we managed to log up bills of $199, $156 and God only knows what for March since the first of the year. Not a yawning big house or even kids who forget to turn off the lights…just a two bedroom all electric apartment. So I could really use this one.

Not only are you protecting your electronics, you are doing the earth and your pocketbook a huge favor. I tried unplugging things for a while in my effort too be more green, but it was really driving me crazy. This looks like a wonderful solution to my problem!!! I think I would buy three additional ones if they work as well as anticipated! Thank you for the opportunity to participate in this giveaway!
03/04/2009 at 7:09 pm Permalink
I really need this because I have so many things that are using electricity because I don’t unplug them at night. Between monitors, printers, and TVs I could probably save quite a lot by having this to power them completely off.

Thanks for the giveaway…The power strip I use is mounted behind my desk, next to the wall, between a bookcase; I turn it off when I am not at my desk (desk lamp transformer, computer, cell phone charger, phone, printer, etc.) but it requires me to get on my knees or contort my body in a yoga pose to press the switch. A power strip with a remote would be a welcome addition to my home office, and save me the backache.
