Real Food Wednesday: August 12, 2009

It’s that time again — the Real Food Wednesday blog carnival.
Welcome to Real Food Wednesday!
I don’t have a post up yet — but I will post it as soon as I do. I was busy getting my little girl’s first Big Girl Bed set up, and the post I’m working on requires a lot of research… Anyway, I’ll have my post up by tomorrow morning Pacific time.
Meanwhile, Kelly posted about a giveaway for Cultures For Health — they’re giving away 3 free starter cultures (kombucha, kefir, sourdough, yogurt). Visit Kelly the Kitchen Kop to enter to win!
Don’t forget — Kelly is hosting Real Food Wednesday next week!

Hi Ann Marie -
My post is about the American Dietetic Association’s refusal to acknowledge the importance of organic foods in our diet. One of my pet peeves happens to be the philosophy held by registered dietitians about nutrition. I’ve gone head to head with a whole number of them in trying to clean up student lunches in Boise, Idaho and it is endlessly frustrating. Thanks for your web site and Real Food Wednesdays!

This weeks post is about the relatively unregulated, high levels of mercury in mainstream brands of tuna, how to find minimal-mercury tuna, and how to make a darned-tasty marinated, raw tuna delight!

Hey gang, we were on vacation last weekend but we stopped for a quick snack on the road and discovered a new (well new to us) Probiotic drink that was super yummy, our last post shares the fun fruity magic of the land of flora.

Greek yogurt on top of a decadent blueberry tiramisu….this dish is one of my favorites. I even have a gluten & sugar-free ladyfinger recipe if you want to make your own and it doesn’t require any piping at all.
Thanks so much for hosting!

Hi, Anne Marie – congrats on your little girl graduating to a Big Girl Bed! What fun days!
My post this week is my reflection on why we embrace Real Food. People love our food – and little kids who visit hop up to our table and ask for it. That melts my heart, but also confirms that we’re on the right track.

The more distance we put between ourselves and the profoundly broken industrial commercial food system the better. The better for our health, for the local economy, the environment and our own pocketbooks.
Do what you can to become more self-reliant. Turn off the TV, plant some herbs and vegetables, take a class about food preservation. Learn to cook. With practice, these things become second nature.
Consider today’s lunch.. homemade sauerkraut frittered in pastured butter, onions and peppers from the garden, locally made sausage, homemade fermented mustard..

This week, I posted a recipe for Chicken Fry bread salads. It has lots of good for you fats, the sourdough cornbread frybreads are limed as well as sourdough, uses lactofermented sourkraut, isn’t hard to make, pretty inexpensive (I didn’t do the math but I know I didn’t spend much), utilises stock and leftovers, and is perfect for all the bountiful produce of summer. Plus, its totally delicious. It’s my new jackpot meal.

Hi Ann Marie – this is completely unrelated but I thought about you while listening to an npr interview with Nora Ephron about Julie & Julia. The interviewer asked, Do you think this will bring back butter? I thought, since when did butter go anywhere!?

I notice these blog carnivals are getting bigger and bigger! That’s awesome. That means consumers are wising up to the benefits of nourishing traditions and grass-fed meat. Guess who’s helping? Yep. Oprah. Last week I missed the article where the link to EatWild dot com was given! I hope this means wise, traditional eating is becoming more mainstream.

My blog story today is about a local couple who provide a real food delivery service from a group of farms to drop sites all over the community. A great green business idea that helps more people “buy local.”

I have found products made from a company called Keys. They make 100% plant based products that are safe for pets, babies, big kids and parents. I use the MetaClean soap on my face and on to clean my kids’ in the bath. I also use RediCare spary- it’s a natural insect repellent- in the summer on all members of my family. The Galleyon soap is a natural antibacterial soap that uses natural spearmint.
They make one of the safest moisturizing sunblock on the market- it uses zinc- the safest sunblock that has been around for ages. The products are also organic, and they use many fair trade/direct source products. You can learn more and buy these products at http://www.keys-soap.com
