I don’t know about you but I often feel like I am too busy to read. Being a mom and running a business keeps me pretty occupied 24/7. One of the ways I squeeze a little education into my day is to listen to audiobooks, mp3s and podcasts.
What I love about learning this way is it allows me to multitask. You can listen in the car while shuttling the kids to soccer practice, or listen while you’re on the treadmill, cooking or mopping the floor.
How to Listen
I got an iPhone a while back (okay, I stood in line to get one when they first came out — NERD ALERT!). This thing is amazing. Not only can you read books on it (just download Kindle books from Amazon — they’re like half-price) but you can also listen to books, podcasts and internet radio. For a small monthly fee, I download audiobooks from Audible.
Our chapter also always buys the set of mp3s after the annual Weston A. Price Foundation conference. This way I can listen to all the lectures every year. It’s awesome!
If you don’t have an iPhone, you can use any mp3 player. You can also listen on your computer while you’re doing other things. But I like the mobility of listening on the go. Plus, now I actually look forward to going to the gym!
Podcasts I Love
Podcasts are totally free and it’s a great way to keep up to date with what is happening in the world of real food. You can either download podcasts individually or you can subscribe to a podcast feed. That way everytime you sync your mp3 player (or iPod/iPhone) it will automatically download all the new shows for you.
Some of my favorite real food podcast shows include Our Natural Life with hosts, Jon & Cathy Payne, and Underground Wellness with host, Sean Croxton. Click on those links and browse their archives. They’ve done a ton of fascinating shows.
Lately I’ve been really enjoying listening to Jimmy Moore of the Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show. He’s a wonderful interviewer and he has fabulous guests.
Here are some of my recent favorite interviews on Jimmy Moore’s show (just click the links to listen online or download):
Gary Taubes, author of Good Calories, Bad Calories
Joel Salatin on Sustainable Farming
Weston A. Price Foundation Founder And President, Sally Fallon
Dr. Jorge Flechas on Iodine
Mark Sisson’s Primal Blueprint
Nina Planck’s Real Food for Mother and Baby
Julia Ross on Curing Carb Addiction
Dr. Malcolm Kendrick Debunks The Great Cholesterol Con
Richard Morris’s A Life Unburdened
Dr. Mary Newport on Coconut Oil & Alzheimer’s (Note: Dr. Mary Newport will be speaking next week at this year’s WAPF conference Nov 13-15 in Chicago)
I think my top three faves in that list were Sally Fallon, Gary Taubes & Joel Salatin. It was hard to choose though because they are all such interesting shows!
UPDATE: One more I forgot to add: Sustainable Suppers — a fabulous podcast and blog.

Thanks so much for this post! I’ve been wanting to do more podcast listening on my ipod, but haven’t been sure where to go to get some decent listening material. Now I know where to go!

This is the second post I’ve come across today that linked to Underground Wellness. In all my research into real food, I had never come across Sean Croxton. He’s awesome! I also love Jon and Cathy Payne. I’ve never heard of Jimmy Moore either, so thanks for the info.
I’m low tech… so I usually just watch and listen online.

I’m going to click in and listen to one now while I’m working, thanks for putting the links here so we can find all these great topics so easily! Hmmmm, which one to pick…

I love podcasts! Love Jimmy and all of his guests! I also enjoy non food related podcasts such as This American Life, the Moth, re:sound, and morning becomes eclectic on NPR

Thank you Andrea –
I know & love This American Life and Morning Becomes Electric but I don’t know the others. I will check those out.
I also like the New Yorker Out Loud podcasts.

I listened to Sean Croxton interview Sally Fallon. It was a very good interview. I would really like to listen to Jon and Cathy Payne; I always get good information from Cathy’s comments that she posts here.
Meg Cattell will be speaking at the Weston A Price conference. She and her husband own Windsor Dairy the farm where I get my dairy, eggs and beef in Colorado. I would love to hear to what she has to say at the conference.

Tina – if you are not able to attend the conference, the mp3s will be for sale after the event is over. They are not expensive. We will be posting about it on the Real Food Media blogs — with links to where to download.

Hey Cheeseslave,
THANKS so much for highlighting my podcast show on health and nutrition. And I appreciate Tina’s desire to hear more from Jon and Cathy Payne. I am currently working on getting an interview with them as we speak. Keep spreading the good work of healthy living!

I didn’t know iPhones would play Amazon’s Kindle book files!
You are so right about the utility of listening to books. I do the same thing; I listen while folding laundry, cooking, gardening, etc. Most of the time I don’t use headphones; I either use the small speakers in my iPhone or place the iPhone into a speaker dock that I can hear throughout my downstairs (or I move my laptop to a convenient spot and listen that way). Last weekend I rested out in the midday sun for 20 minutes (each side) to make some Vitamin D3 (this time of year one has to be really far south in the US for enough of the sun ray wavelengths that result in Vit D3 production). It was too bright to read so I listened to a UCTV (www.grassrootshealth.net) lecture about sunscreen and cancer on my iPhone. I listen to lots of lectures from UCTV, Grassrootshealth.net, and Stanford U’s TV series in the car, too. It’s a great way to keep up with the latest research results on Vitamin D and other subjects.
Sean Croxton is a local guy. I met him one day in a local food store and we struck up a conversation about healthy food, of course. Later I looked up his online radio show and realized I’d seen YouTube videos of his via a link on Scott Kustes’ Modern Forager blog. Sean’s a dynamo!

I recently discovered Sustainable Suppers podcast at http://www.sustainablesuppers.com and I LOVE it. Holly Hickman has a fantastic radio voice, great interviews with authors, chefs, farmers, and other real foodies. She even gives us frugal tips from her own kitchen. Check it out!

Thanks for the great list! I’m one of those who likes to listen on the computer while I’m doing other things. You’ve given me lots to look forward to this coming week.

Kathryn – I was going to mention Sustainable Suppers. That is a great show. She hadn’t been blogging/podcasting for a while but it looks like she is back! Thanks I will add it to the post.

I also loved Sean’s interviews with Sally Fallon, and the one with Julia Ross as well. “Our Natural Life” is a great show, too.
I am so psyched to have another way to get all this great info – I can’t always sit down with a book (without a toddler in my lap, that is). Thanks again for pointing us this way!
