UPDATE: The giveaway is now closed.
Whew! Am I ever busy these past few weeks. It’s been a lot of work prepping for the Weston A. Price conference. I have lots of irons in the fire and am so excited about all the ways I’m going to be helping people in the new year.
One of the things I’m launching is a “menu mailer”. A menu mailer is essentially a cookbook combined with a menu planner and shopping list. It is especially helpful to those of us who cook traditional food. As you all know, it isn’t just opening a can or a box and throwing something in the microwave. It takes planning and preparation. And it is more labor-intensive than when you rely on modern convenience foods.
The menu mailer will be launched December 6, 2009. However, I’m sending out the first mailer on Sunday, November 22 (2 weeks prior to the week listed — to give you time to shop and prepare).
(Thanks to my dear mother-in-law, Nancy, for encouraging me to do this. She’s right about every business instinct she has. I appreciate you, Bubbe! And YES I am including Bubbe’s recipes for chopped liver, latkes and brisket in the December menu mailer, for a Hanukkah menu. Seriously, her chopped liver was the best liver I’ve ever had. Did not taste like liver AT ALL. Truly delicious — I could not stop eating it!)
CHEESESLAVE Menu Mailer Features
Three full dinner menus each week plus 1 dessert or breakfast recipe – I want to throw in some breakfast recipes because we all need more breakfast ideas.
Coupons – I’m working with our Real Food Media sponsors to line up special discounts and coupon codes that you will, as a subscriber, have access to EVERY month.
Weekly shopping guide – Printable guide with your shopping list organized by category
Advance delivery – You’ll receive the menu mailer a full 2 weeks in advance – which will give you plenty of time to shop and even order stuff online, as well as start soaking and sprouting, as needed.
Mostly easy, with some challenging recipes – Most menus will be easy but I’m including one per week that will be a little harder and/or more time/consuming (special occasion or fancier meals like Roast Duck w/ Cherry Sauce or Tacos with Homemade Tortillas).
SUPER nutrient-dense – ALL the meals will be nutrient dense (bone broth/fermented foods/pastured eggs & dairy/unrefined sweeteners/etc.) but up to once per week I will do a super-nutrient dense meal including super foods like liver or other organ meat or shellfish or fish eggs. As Kelly the Kitchen Kop says, “Time to put on your big girl panties!”
Budget-friendly – Most menus will be budget-friendly, with tips on how to save money on ingredients. Some meals will cost more (like holiday meals or shellfish) but I’ll include tips on how to save money on those as well.
Kid-friendly – Most menus are kid-friendly (chicken nuggets, french fries, chili cheese dogs, sprouted flour pizza) but some are more adventurous (things like roasted bone marrow or sushi or Moules a la Mariniere,) to help expand your family’s palette.
Seasonal – Gazpacho soup and pesto pizza in summer and butternut squash soup in fall.
Special holiday menus – I’m planning Christmas (tamales for Christmas Eve, British Prime Rib & Figgy Pudding w/ Hard Sauce for Christmas Eve) & Hanukkah (Bubbe’s famous chopped liver, brisket, and potato latkes with sour cream and apple sauce) as well as Valentine’s Day, Easter & Fourth of July menus.
Regional menus from around the world – French, Italian (Northern and Southern), Spanish, Southern Home Cooking (pulled pork sandwiches & sweet potato fries), Thai, Mediterranean, Creole, TexMex (chili & cornbread), Vietnamese, Japanese (real miso soup from scratch & salmon teriyaki).
Flexible – I’ll include easier options when possible (if you don’t want to or don’t have time to make the corn tortillas, there will also be an option to pick them up at the store).
I am working to make this menu mailer something that will help you create nutrient-dense meals for your family every week.

I would like to win because I have been cooking 4-5 nights a week, and I never plan my meals for the week, and would like to start doing so. I think by getting weekly mailer I would be more likely to sit down once a week and figure out what I need and purchase everything on one day rather then running to the market throughout the week.

I subscribe and I’d like to win because I love healthy nourishing meal options, I’d love not to have to plan them:)

I’d like to win because now that I’m working full time, I don’t seem to have the time or energy to menu plan, which means our menus get less healthy, and our budget gets stretched as we go out to eat more. yikes. Its bad. Since clearly I can’t menu plan myself right now, I would love some help, and also a source of new interesting and already TF recipes.

What an undertaking. Very much needed though. I was just talking with my husband last night about our spending over the last year– my grocery bill is pretty high, and alot of that has to do with not planning a menu with a shopping list that I can stick to. I know for a fact that menu planning cuts down on the food bill because when you stick to a plan, the impulse buys go way down. So, think of me kindly and pick me for someone who deserves a free subscription to your menu mailer!

I have have a family of five that I am constantly trying to feed nutritiously. I get all your website updates and print out recipes each time, print them and enter them into a cookbook of sorts. I would love this package because it would give me additional ideas on how to make my meals more nutritiously dense and delicious at the same time! Thanks for all the great ideas and recipes on your site, Bronwen.

I want to win the CHEESESLAVE Menu Mailer because as a student I find it so easy to fall into bad habits either because I’m stressed and don’t have time, and really should have planned things in advance, or because friends, fellow students and life in general keeps dragging me in different sirections , which always have some sort of food (although the calling all of it food would not be quite correct when one thinks about what there is in it.) I always really want this because I know, by personal experience, that real food is what keeps me happy and sane – my depression and borderline bi-polar tendencies are completely gone when I keep up this way of eating, and I really need that.

Hi!
My husband has leaky gut syndrome and massive allergies to food, and adrenal exhaustion. We’re working on healing through nutrition, for the entire family. I’m looking to lose weight and heal my metabolism. I’d like to raise my two year old with good eating habits, and a menu planner sounds lovely and handy.

I love to spend Sunday in the kitchen cooking for the week. However, I never seem to plan for that on Saturday when I can go shopping so I always wind up cooking based on what I have on hand. Works out most of the time, but when it doesn’t I am frustrated. I know better! A plan worked out for me is what I need!

I’m one of those weird birds that menus three meals a day seven days a week and has to have a recipe for everything I cook. For about eleven months now we’ve been dining directly out of NT and we’ve tried pretty close to all the recipes there. I need inspiration!

I’ve been trying to eat Weston Price style for a couple of years now and when I fall off the wagon it’s because I haven’t prepared properly and the easy to get food is sometimes not what’s best for me. I also work night shift now and that means I need to re-focus on eating well for my body. (I follow on RSS.)

I am so excited you have decided to do this! I have subscribed to other menu mailers but the low-carb ones were the only ones that were close to a traditional diet. Also, I am a staff-person at my daughter’s homeschool co-op (democratic, Sudbury Valley type) and I would like to provide WAPF friendly snacks for the kids and I think I could double the kid recipes and adapt them for snack time. This is too cool!

I would love to win this as I am so busy these days with WAPF, 4 Kids, House, etc. and have not gotten a good menu planning routine down and am a bit bored with our same old rotations!! I need some serious inspiration as eating Nutrient dense does take planning!! I know that having a plan will also help cut down our grocery budget since lately it has gone up as we aren’t planning so tend to buy more unnecessary items!!

I would love to win as I could use help in incorporating menus for my family and my full time little daycare eaters. It is a busy day and cooking in the traditional way for this many people takes a lot of extra time. I end up relying on a few different meals that I know they will enjoy and will eat but that are healthful. I would love to combine my meal planning to include ‘all’ my eaters! Plus have fancier meal ideas for family holiday meals.
09/11/2009 at 6:25 am Permalink
Oh yea! This is so exciting! Winning this free subscription would be a huge blessing for my family. We are fairly new to traditional foods and I have a hard time providing yummy recipes, with enough variety to ensure optimal nutrition. I also have a fairly picky toddler who I worry about getting all the variety of food that she needs. You always blog about food/ recipes that sound so delicious, nutritious, and sometimes “exotic” (to my limited palate). I have not found a way to get my family (or myself) to eat organ meats, a variety of shellfish (can you say shrimp only??), or many fermented foods. Thank you for doing this – I can’t wait to receive my first mailer!

Oh, and I would love to win this! I’m student teaching full time and have 3 kids of my own. I haven’t had time to plan my meals since the semester started. The hardest part of changing to healthier eating has been finding recipes my family loves. They are not picky, but I find myself going back to our old standbys too often. My 3 year old is the hardest, since he will eat almost any meat that is ground, but not a lot that isn’t. (and he loves pate!) I’ve been following your blog for sometime, now and love it! You do a wonderful job!

I was a raw vegan for 5 years trying to eat for health. I have multiple sclerosis and a saturated fatless diet caused me to have hypothyroid and periperal neuropathy. I was lent a copy of “Nourishing Traditions” by Sally Fallon and have since bought a copy. She makes sense of eating meat! I saw her on a raw food site with Kevin Gianni and it clicked that I was missing the nutrients in animal source foods. I found this (CHEESESLAVE) site while looking for answers and it has provided many great tips. I now eat pastured beef and free-range eggs (non-soy fed) that I get from local sources, raw milk, kefir, cheese, butter, country style bacon, sour dough bread, chicken feet and yogurt that I order from a source that was provided by a Weston Price group leader.
I have seen improvements in my health having switched to this style of eating. The only problem I have is eating enough food, getting enough calories. I’m working on it.
Keep up the good work!

As a menu-planning-challenged mom who follows WAP dietary guidelines, I would so appreciate this Menu Mailer giveaway! Our family of 5 have been following a traditional foods diet for over 4 years. Our nutrient-dense diet saw us through the cancer treatment of our oldest child (dx’d medulloblastoma 3.5 years ago) who consumed raw, grass-fed dairy throughout the 7 months of treatment, including during hospital stays, and continues to eat a traditional, nutrient-dense diet as a college freshman living on campus. She’s a beautiful, healthy, cancer-free testimony to the health benefits of nourishing, traditional foods.

I don’t know how to tweet, only access FB on my mobile device and am otherwise too time-constrained raising two girls, supporting my DH in grad school and working full-time. A menu planner just might change my life. We NT as much as I can but we have a long way to go. A weekly plan would help so much.
09/11/2009 at 9:30 am Permalink
I’d love to win! Thanks for the chance. I have been thinking it would make it so much easier on us if we had a menu plan, not only in time saved but in money saved at the store. I already love your recipes on your blog and would love more NT recipes. Not sure why I have so much trouble thinking ahead so I can cook the NT way, this would help so much.
This is what I’ve done to enter (besides commenting why I would like to win):
1. Blogged about it here (although I am not much of blogger at this point): http://faithmariehappenings.blogspot.com/2009/11/mom-could-really-use-this.html
2. Already signed up for email updates.
3. Followed you on twitter and tweeted about it
4. Already a friend on facebook and posted about the giveaway.
5. Not yet.
6. Stumbled post (ps1914)
Can’t wait to hear more about your menu mailer!

AM- you amaze me! I would sign up for your menu mailer in a heart beat. We seem to have the same taste. I get your email updates ( and love passing them on to friends and family) , have already friended you on facebook, don’t know much about twitter and I will make sure I mention you on my blog… again.
A menu mailer is quite an undertaking, but if you’re already doing it then it makes sense to share it with us busy folks that will value it so much. I’ve got many irons in the fire too and am bummed that we can’t make it to the conference this year… do you remember me from last year? my son is Henry and I ended up spend in the weekend with Kate and the other kiddos?
We’ve got dairy goats, laying hens and now 23 ducks and 4 heritage piglets. I’m determined to make it to the conference next year.

I would love to win this. You’re blog has completely changed the way my young family eats. I have always enjoyed cooking and eating healthy, but this blog to this a step further and introduced me to all the important concepts like real milk, weston price, cod liver oil etc. I found your blog through the guy who sells sourdough at the hollywood farmers market and I’m so happy that I texted myself your website address to check it out when I got home as it is a major source for health and food. I want to inspire other young families and friends in their 20′s to care about the issues that most people our age don’t seem to care about. I feel lucky to be able to bring my 19 month old son this way, I feel lucky that he will remember his mom in the kitchen cooking delicious nutricious food from scratch the way i remember growing up and the way I used to remember my grandma in the kitchen making everything from scratch. I would like to win so that I can get even better and budgeting, get more creative and take this lifestyle to the next level.
I have posted a link on facebook. Emailed everyone in my address book. And I subscribe to this blog.
keep up the good work!

Hi! I would love to win because I am a full time student with a pretty heavy intern job (25 hrs/wk) and this would be perfect to keep my lifestyle running at its best. I have a very hard time sticking with a menu, (or even planning one!) because of time and finance issues. My mom and I talk weekly about food ideas to help keep nutrition in my diet, but without a clear plan, it is really hard to keep myself going without falling to prepackaged and processed foods. Being a student especially, I find it very hard to eat well on a good budget that I can afford. I know that my food issues are affecting my life in a negative fashion and I would love to turn that around!

Hi Anne Marie,
I have been making small changes in the way our family eats for about 2 years now. It’s been slow but sure… kind of like turning a huge cruise liner. I would have crashed and jumped overboard if I had tried to turn us around too quickly so it’s been good…slowly sneaking food, drinks, and information to my sweet family friends. I feel like recently, though, I’ve stalled. With six kids, soccer season and a husband who travels, I resorted to eating out 2 times per week…mostly Pizza and Noodles and Company. I just can’t do that anymore…for our health and our budget. I need a good kick in the pants in the right direction. I think your menu mailer would be the perfect kick! Also, I not only need to cook more often, but I also need to put on my big girl knickers and try some new, nutrient-dense foods…like liver…ugghh…I’ll try….for the kids’ sake. Thanks for all that you do for us!

Your blog has so many practical hints/tips/recipes, and this mailer is a great idea. I hope the mailer is a big success, and that you go on to publish a book — it would be a big help to have as a “next step” after reading NT. I hope I win:)
One last thing: this is off topic, but I’ve been putting turmeric into my bone broth when it cooks, and you can’t even taste it in the final soup (I also think it adds a nice yellow color, but some cooks may not like it because it is very brightly colored). It’s a great way to add an immunity-enhancing spice.

Hello AM,
I have been following your updates for your blog and RSS feeds for a while now. Also been following you on Twitter and subsequently ‘Friended’ you on Facebook. I have Twittered this post several times, and updated my Facebook status with this post about the menu mailer giveaway. I have also provided a link and brief statement on my Facebook page. Just a few minutes ago I e-mailed more than 5 friends and family (couldn’t leave my mother out) about this giveaway, as I know a few of them could really use the menu ideas and the time allowance to shop for said ingredients.
I have just signed up for StumbleUpon (as it will be a great tool to use with my blog), and the first thing I did was subscribe to you and Stumble Cheeseslave. My name on there is nourishedcanuck.
I will be writing a post on my blog in the next few days regarding how to adapt to traditional foods, and this giveaway of yours will be a major topic and reference for the article. This will be the relaunch of my blog – new name!
I really would love to win this mailer as I am a student/working part-time, who is trying to feed myself and a partner who is also attending school and suffers from low energy and depression. This past year I have slowly integrated traditional foods more and more – a big step was becoming a member of the cowshare to buy raw milk; and another was joining a CSA for meat and eggs from pasture based animals. Both had struggles at first because of the upfront cost, but I managed and worked my butt off to get these great foods. They have already
I struggle a lot with making sure my meals are as nutritious as possible on a regular basis because of time constraints, and a menu planner would be an amazing tool to ensure that we are both getting adequate nutrition to sustain us through lots of schooling, and health issues.
I have also been spreading the word of Weston A Price Foundation goals, and have championed issues of traditional foods. This is a passion of mine and would be great to make sure I am following my own ideals each day to let people know its possible and they have choices – not just the supermarket shelves “Pay Less, Get More”.
Thank you so much for this opportunity and see you this coming week!

I would like to win because the menu plans would help me help my husband prepare the meals. My disbility keeps me from being able to prepare all the meals. My husband does that, but he does not understand about cooking the traditional way. If it were all planned out for him, made easy for him, then I (we) could have some very wholesome meals to help me heal.
10/11/2009 at 12:07 pm Permalink
I could really use help in menu planning and preparation with nutritional foods. I have not been very adventurous over the years which has limited my choices, so I am ready to branch out and learn.
10/11/2009 at 12:25 pm Permalink
Wow, thanks to everyone for entering! I’m SO excited about this. And thrilled that so many people out there are excited about eating healthier.
And even MORE thrilled that so many people out there understand that eating healthy means butter, cream, beef heart and bone marrow. LOL! You guys ROCK!
I said to my housekeeper yesterday, who comes from Honduras and grew up eating a traditional diet, “Look how many people want to learn to cook tongue!” (She grew up making Tacos de Lengua.) She laughed and said she was just telling one of her family members about me and all the things I eat and they said, “She’s American??”
I wanted to let you know that I am planning on offering a more expanded version of the menu mailer — 6 meals per week instead of just 3. So for those of you who want that, I will make it easy for you to upgrade when I’m ready with that version (soon!).

After 25 years in the restaurant business (retiring after 9/11 wiped 40% of the independent operators off the map) and seeing just what goes into the plates and people who eat from them, the move toward a more natural and unaffected pantry is both welcome and a tad intimidating.
I know how to plan a menu, whether it’s for 4 or 400 – finding sources of wholesome, unadulterated foods among the deceptive and vaguely-monikered imposters is a bit more daunting. A template of what to look for, how to mix ‘n’ match, what stores well, what doesn’t and all that would be wonderfully helpful in transitioning over to a non-industrial diet.
In the 6 months since I’ve begun to avoid margarine (read: plastic), rancid oils and grain-fed anything, I’ve lost 30 pounds and my family is beginning to think there just may be a human under all the snarling and grumbling that usually came after a day. I’d like to include them on this little trip – they’re actualy warming to the idea of no more snacks that come out of wrappers at room temp – but since I work 1-and-a-half jobs and the missus works another, well, you get the idea.
Anyway – I’m pretty sure I subscribe (went there today and it looked familiar . . . and I really, really hate being redundant) and if I had more of my brain with me I’d know. Probably due to years of trans-fat buildup in the cerebellum.
So, thanks for the consideration. I and mine would be obliged to sing your praises from the rooftops (until the HOA writes us a letter) should we be so graced.
PS – I emailed 5 co-workers, including our HR director, since our company is currently doing a “Biggest (Healthiest) Loser” program. 300 people signed up and so far, after 5 weeks, over 1800 lbs. have been cumulatively shed. I lost all mine before the program started (therefore I am inspiration) but I send them as much natural-foods info as I can find, and it seems they actually incorporate it into their twice-weekly sessions. How ’bout that?

Hello, I would love to win the weekly planner. I have been following the WAP way of life for nearly seven years and still have not gotten the knack of preparing ahead. With four children, homeschooling, having our own animals, a large garden, and all the other things that make up my life plus growing up on fast and conivent foods, it has been really hard to learn to cook and then implement WAP. Thank you for all you do to help us out here.

I would love to win this because I am really overwhelmed with cooking. I have chosen to cook for my family, but I have a day job, too. I have already used some of your recipes. Next one to try is fried clams.
Thank you for all these good things on your blog.

WOW! All the responses. I feel that my reasons would be extremely redundant to everything i have read above. Mother to a 15 mo, wife to a husband who is extremely susceptable to illnesses – we started this journey as a last ditch effort to get healthy and stay that way. I feel sometimes like the only reason we fall off the wagon is because we get tired of the same 10 recipies i have mastered or we just don’t plan our time well (or shopping for that matter) Your menu would help us to potentially overcome that. Best of luck with your decision. There are a lot of people on here. I am tweeting you now as well.

Hi there,
I would absolutely love to win this contest. I am a single working mom with three angelic, beautiful girls, all with very nice teeth and bones–thanks to goodness I found Ms. Fallon and the Weston A. Price Foundation. There are so so many pressures as a single mom, and getting all of the planning and preparation figured out ahead of time is mind-boggling. I feel that our family would be greatly blessed to be able to check out all of these wonderful resources.
Thanks and Peace,
Melissa Jensen

I’ve been on & off scd for 9 years due to long hist. of ulcerative colitis. Bought Nourishing Traditions a yr ago and have made many changes in feeding family: kefir water, raw milk, pastured meats, coconut oil, tallow, soaked grains, cutting back on oj, etc. I tend to make 2 meals (one for me, one for fam.) so I need to streamline. I’m hopeless with meal planning.
I’ve enjoyed your blog for a while, finally subscribed : ) -Teresa

I would love to win a subscription to your mailer. I’m committed to the idea of traditional foods for my family, and I really do try. I’m having trouble with the financial and planning aspect of it. My husband is an architecture grad student (really long days), I work close to full time, have a toddler and am pregnant, so money and planning/prepping time for me is really tight. And ideas – I really run out sometimes. Some of the other mailers I’ve tried (both TF and ones I modify) helped me with my food spending and time, but my husband didn’t like the recipes. I LOVE your recipes, and so does he. I’m so excited you’re doing this.
I subscribe to your blog as well.

This is SUCH a good idea. Wow. It would change my life, even if you did regular recipies. I constantly wander around grocery stores clueless, standing by veggies, thinking, “I like veggies”, and not having any idea what or how to cook them. Inspiring and something for my wish list!

I would be honored to win. I am following on Twitter and retweeted about the giveaway. I would love to get better at planning and organizing meals. I started eating in this manner when I was pregnant with my son two years ago and now I am eight weeks pregnant again. I feel happy that my children get to eat so well. And I could really use the extra encouragement and inspiration I feel your menus could provide. Thanks for the opportunity.

I’d like to win because I just finished reading Nourishing Traditions last month and am feeling overwhelmed trying to incorporate the principles into our daily meals. Having menu ideas, and especially being prompted to get the preliminary steps done ahead of time (soaking, etc.), would be tremendously helpful. Thank you for doing this!

As a grad student I am constantly looking for ways to reduce stress in my life. Having someone else suggest menus and recipes would be particularly helpful since I spend a lot of time doing this. Things are harder when you are not content to feed yourself and your loved ones “convenience food” and when you haven’t grown up eating traditional foods and learning how to make it.

This sounds very nice – I am definitely in a rut, too. I have watched my 2 yr old turn from a sickly acid-reflux baby to a happy, well-rested, bouncy and very verbal 2 yr old (she relates her dreams to me!) because of NT and real food. I am determined to keep going, but I’d love some fresh ideas.

Hi! I would love to win the menu mailer because I am a disorganized person and have a hard time planning ahead for WAPF friendly recipes (e.g. soaking beans). I think having a weekly grocery list and recipe list would help me immensely in my goal to follow the WAPF principles. I am signed up for your RSS feeds.

This is my first time at you blog and all I can say is WOW! I have been searching for a way to include the foods I love to eat with my current exercise program called the FBF System and now I think I have. I’m really impressed with the nutrient density of your recipes. Needless to say, I’m going to give some of these recipes a try because the descriptions are just making my mouth water!
