Hooray! It’s Day 1 of the Kettlebell Challenge! We’ll be swinging kettlebells for 5 weeks. And I’m giving away $500 in prizes.

I’ve already had 20 people send me their measurements and before photos.

If you have no idea what I’m talking about, click here to visit the Kettlebell Challenge page and learn all about it.

Enter to Win $500 in Prizes

Four participants will win the following prizes (one prize per person):

Grand Prize: $200 Amazon Gift Certificate for anything you want. Maybe it’s that skinny pair of designer jeans you are GOING to fit into — or how about some Vibram Fivefingers or an iPod Touch to load your tunes on? Whatever you decide to get, make sure it is something that is a special treat that you love and makes you feel happy. Retail value $200
First Prize: 12 months of Audible membership – I LOVE my Audible membership! You can listen to audiobooks while you work out. (Yeah, you know you’re going to have that kettlebell DVD memorized.) Get a new audiobook every month. Retail value $150
Second Prize: FitBit One Wireless Activity & Sleep Tracker – Wear a FitBit and you can track your steps and activity. I love mine — it keeps me motivated to stay active. Retail value $100
Third Prize: $50 lululemon gift certificate Don’t you love lululemon athletic clothing? Use this gift certificate for anything on their website or in their stores. Retail value $50

Click here to learn more about the challenge and read the rules.

Send Your Measurements and Before Photos

If you want to join us in the Kettlebell Challenge, and you have not yet sent me your before photos and measurements, please do. Click here to read how to do that.

I will be posting my measurements and before photos online sometime in the next few days — been crazy busy and can’t find my measuring tape. I think my daughter has been using it as a leash for her stuffed animals.

Start Logging Workouts in the Kettlebell Challenge

Are you swinging your kettlebell today? It’s time to start logging workouts!

Here’s the widget so you can log your workouts:

Mandatory Entry – Sign Up for My Mailing List

How to Log Workouts

Remember to log your workouts every time you do them. I’ve read that it’s best to do kettlebells every other day, not every day. Although you can work out as often as you like.

Winners will be chosen based on RESULTS (weight and inches lost, before and after photos), not the number of times you work out.

Please note — you can only log your workouts ONCE PER DAY. So you must come back to this page to log your workouts on the days that you do them.

Click here to read the rules of the Kettlebell Challenge.

How’s It Going?

Please post your comments below. I want to hear how it’s going for you!

I’ll post regular challenge posts every week so we can ask questions, vent, and share.

Will you be posting who entered? I sent measurements but dont know if you received my email.

sheri January 4, 2013 at 1:05 PM

Yes, I too sent my pics and measurements kinda feeling weird about it…but excited to start! Can you let us know where to post workouts and who’s in? =D

Ann Marie Michaels January 4, 2013 at 5:39 PM

Hmm normally Rafflecopter shows you who entered.

It is not showing it for some reason.

If it doesn’t show the entries in the next day or two I guess I can just post a list of who entered.

Andrea January 5, 2013 at 6:44 AM

Please do!

sheri January 5, 2013 at 11:45 AM

is it because I am not using Facebook to log in??

Ann Marie Michaels January 5, 2013 at 1:10 PM

I’m not sure.. I used Facebook to login and it works fine

Sheri January 5, 2013 at 1:25 PM

That’s what I meant. I don’t want to use Facebook…so the questions I have are: did you receive my email? And should I just post my workouts here? I’m off to go workout now….thanks…:)

Ann Marie Michaels January 6, 2013 at 8:43 AM

Yes I just checked and I did receive your email, thank you!

You might want to send me some better photos though. The ones you sent are TINY and blurry. I don’t think I would be able to use those.

Hopefully you have figured out how to log your workouts — just use the widget.

Good luck!

Sheri January 6, 2013 at 9:33 AM

Okay thanks! Now, if I can only stand up to have my hub to take my pic omg I a, sooooo sore!

Andrea January 7, 2013 at 6:22 AM

Ann Marie, would you mind checking mine and my husband’s to see if they are acceptable? Our camera wasn’t working so we used a phone.

Anne January 4, 2013 at 11:25 AM

What is the deadline to submit before pictures?

Ann Marie Michaels January 4, 2013 at 5:38 PM

No deadline for before pics – just make sure you get me your after pics in time so I can choose a winner

Michelle H January 4, 2013 at 12:02 PM

Can I enter tomorrow?

Ann Marie Michaels January 4, 2013 at 5:37 PM

kelly January 4, 2013 at 12:11 PM

Just logged my first workout and my photo/measurements will be headed your way later today. Horrified at my current state of fitness, frankly! Thanks so much for the virtual kick in the ass!

Ann Marie Michaels January 4, 2013 at 4:45 PM

@Kelly I’m horrified at my current state of fitness, too — which is why I started this challenge! Glad you’re doing it with me!

kelly January 4, 2013 at 5:54 PM

You’re welcome – glad I could be of service! ;)

Jill C January 4, 2013 at 1:44 PM

Will the widget be on your main page, or will I need to come back to this post to record my workouts?
And ow. I am sore. Yay!

Ann Marie Michaels January 4, 2013 at 5:40 PM

Good for you! Sore is good!

Come back to this page to log workouts.

I’ll post the widget on future updates as well so you can use it when you check kettlebell updates

Jill C January 4, 2013 at 8:41 PM

Thanks Annmarie – I can’t wait to kettlebell again tomorrow! Soon I’ll be buffer than my husband!

Sadie January 4, 2013 at 2:09 PM

Feeling you ladies!! Sent my stuff in last night and it was scary to send the photos. Kept telling myself that only AnnMarie will see them unless I am cool enough to win something and then it will be worth it, right!?!? ;P
The biggest motivation came as a surprise as my husband wanted to support me and do it together. When I realized that I weigh 2 pounds more than him and he is 8 inches taller…wow that was a serious kick in the butt!
After 10 minutes of the workout I had to take a break to tend to my toddler and my legs were already wobbly but boy does it feel good to FINALLY be doing something more than a dog/kid walk a few times a week.
Thank you all for being here!

Ann Marie Michaels January 4, 2013 at 5:41 PM

Good for you!!!

Erica January 4, 2013 at 6:46 PM

Ya no kiddin. My husband took a picture of my back and it was the first time i’d seen that in like…ever…I was like, WHAT you didn’t tell me I had a back BOOB! Sighhh. LOL.

Ann Marie Michaels January 4, 2013 at 7:19 PM

@Erica I FEEL YOU on the back boob!!!

Sadie January 5, 2013 at 2:42 PM

@ Erica….HILARIOUS! Thank you for the LOL moment from someone that understands!

Kristin January 4, 2013 at 3:36 PM

I am not sure I understand how to use the widget to log my workouts.

Ann Marie Michaels January 4, 2013 at 5:42 PM

All you have to do is click the button each time you work out (once max per day)

Brenda January 4, 2013 at 5:56 PM

Does any want to share what they are doing for a workout? I am using Lauren Brook’s dvd’s and I have a Bob Harper one I borrowed from my mom. I started 2 days ago and my legs are KILLING me!

Ann Marie Michaels January 4, 2013 at 7:21 PM

I’m using Iron Core Kettlebell Starring Sarah Lurie

It’s hard but not terrible.

Some of the moves are too hard for me (like on the floor and jump back up again) so I skip those. I do what I can!

Jill C January 4, 2013 at 8:44 PM

On the other post, someone posted that there is a website with very good, free workout videos, called fitnessblender. I tried the beginner one and only did 2/3 of it, and it kicked my hiney. The videos were excellent, well done, and depicted good form and the one I watched was very instructional. There were many other videos, presumably not all for beginners, so check it out.

Greta January 7, 2013 at 10:24 AM

I’m using the ones mentioned and this morning I did Jillian Michaels. It kicked my hiney. Very good. I just keep thinking that I’m glad that I’m not on the Biggest Loser with her yelling at me as I couldn’t finish one of the moves. :)

Sara January 7, 2013 at 1:33 AM

I found a good workout on you tube. It’s a cardio kettlebell workout by fitnessblender. The first day I did it I couldn’t do a lot of it and I was a little nauseous, but it has gotten better each time (I have done it 3x). It looks like fitnessblender also has another kettlebell workout on their channel.

Jill C January 7, 2013 at 3:59 AM

fitnessblender actually has several kettlebell workouts, and there is a “beginner” one. On the upper right of their page, you can search keywords, and if you enter “kettlebell”, you get all of their kettlebell workouts. Enjoy!

Jeanmarie January 4, 2013 at 6:34 PM

The activity widget doesn’t seem to be working. OK, I did kettlebells for 15 minutes today. I’m going to go take my measurements now. I’ll have to get David to snap a photo tomorrow as he’s out and it’s dark now. So I’ll send photos tomorrow. I’m up for it!

Ann Marie Michaels January 4, 2013 at 7:20 PM

I wonder why the widget is not working???

Cassandra A January 4, 2013 at 6:57 PM

signed up too! thanks for the extra push :)

JILL January 4, 2013 at 7:08 PM

just purchased a kettlebell and dvd from amazon. looking forward to it!

Wendy January 4, 2013 at 8:34 PM

I was really excited about this last year, but I was newly pregnant. Now, at 3 months postpartum, I have a great starting point with my maternity clothes still fitting better than my regular clothes as well as the appropriately sized regular clothes I’ve tried on in stores =/. I totally had to guess on my dress size.

Should I have sent more than one photo?

(also, I LOVE that you don’t accept comments in all caps!)

Ann Marie Michaels January 6, 2013 at 8:38 AM

@Wendy Most people send 2 or 3. Ideally send me a front, side and back

As for the ALL CAPS, that must be set up in my software — I don’t moderate comments manually. It’s automatic.

Ann Marie Michaels January 6, 2013 at 8:40 AM

OH I just realized what you are talking about — the Comment Rules. I had to post that last year when I wrote some controversial posts about how I’m eating more carbs (people get upset about that) and I had to delete the super nasty angry comments. :-)

Lissa January 5, 2013 at 5:25 AM

I tried yesterday to log in a workout, but this is what my widget says

Ann Marie Michaels January 5, 2013 at 1:10 PM

Are you logged in?

Lissa January 5, 2013 at 3:17 PM

Yes, it does say Hello Lissa

Ann Marie Michaels January 6, 2013 at 8:40 AM

Is it working now?

I am logged in and it says HELLO ANNMARIE and there is a button for Log your Workout.

Hope you can see that too!

Lissa January 6, 2013 at 5:51 PM

I logged in and out twice and even tried logging in with fb…still the same…maybe I am just not suppose to be included… 8 (

Ann Marie Michaels January 7, 2013 at 7:56 AM

Which browser are you using? Which operating system? It’s working for me on Firefox on a Mac. Are you logging in via Facebook? That’s what I’m doing.

Julie January 5, 2013 at 10:20 AM

Thanks so much for doing this — it’s the perfect incentive to get back on track after a few months of doing a whole lot of nothing.

Robin January 5, 2013 at 2:23 PM

Hi. I’ve been contemplating doing the kettlebell challenge with you. I do go to crossfit 3-4 times a week but need to be doing something every day, I feel. I need to see reulsts, a.s.ap! Just note quite sure how this works. I send you an email with photos, stats. I get that part. But I am just not sure how I’d log my workouts? I don’t see a widget.

Ann Marie Michaels January 7, 2013 at 7:57 AM

You don’t see a widget? That’s odd. Which browser/operating system are you using? You must have something installed that is causing you not to see it.

It’s just below the header:

Start Logging Workouts in the Kettlebell Challenge

Katie January 5, 2013 at 2:47 PM

I feel very not-savvy right now because the widget is confusing me. Sorry! I think I just entered today’s workout. I hit that +10 button and this is what is says my recent activity is:
just nowRecent_Activity_is_on_vacation.+1
just nowWe’re_cooking_up_something_awesome…+1
just now…to_replace_it….Stay_tuned!!!+1
Is that right? Sorry for the confusion! And thanks for this contest! It’s just what I needed!

Lissa January 5, 2013 at 3:36 PM

That is what my widget says

Ann Marie Michaels January 6, 2013 at 8:09 AM

It says that unless you are logged in.

Bethany January 6, 2013 at 7:36 PM

Mine says that under the Recent Activity link/tab. But if I click the little tab/link for Log My Workout, it has the right place to click to enter that you worked out. HTH.

Ann Marie Michaels January 7, 2013 at 7:58 AM

This is something new with Rafflecopter. Not sure what is going on with them. Maybe I should upgrade and pay the monthly fee and see if that goes away.

But yes, just click the 10 points button.

Stephanie January 5, 2013 at 6:42 PM

I am wondering the weights will be posted. I have a lot to lose and this looks like a fun challenge, but for me that number to be out on the internet might just be too much. I wouldn’t mind the amount lost but the starting number is embarrassing. I think I have the courage for the pictures to be out there for the “world” to see.

Ann Marie Michaels January 6, 2013 at 8:11 AM

Yes, I will post the before and after weight (pounds lost) However, I will use only your first name and if you don’t want your face on the internet, you can send me photos with body only — no head (just cut the head off before you send to me — or remind me in your email to cut the head off).

Ann Marie Michaels January 7, 2013 at 7:59 AM

And by the way I don’t have a scale and am on the road so I am not sure if I will be able to weigh myself. Don’t let the weight thing stop you.

Lissa January 5, 2013 at 7:40 PM

So as of tonight, I could not log in two work outs

Stephanie January 5, 2013 at 9:44 PM

Maybe your cookies need cleared?

Ann Marie Michaels January 6, 2013 at 8:10 AM

Try logging out of the browser and emptying your cache. Then try logging back in.

Leanne Overlander January 6, 2013 at 8:32 AM

Just completed first kettlebell work out. Feels good to workout!!! Looking forward to the end result :)

Wendy January 6, 2013 at 12:48 PM

Me, too! That was more fun than nearly every home video workout i’ve tried! Quite happy with the Iron Core dvd set- well, the beginner workout at least!

Bebe January 6, 2013 at 12:53 PM

Second workout done… and I’m still alive! I am reminded though about how sore my inner thighs are after first starting working out with kettlebells. ;) It is a nice sort of pain though, the kind that comes from doing something good for my old body!

Bebe January 10, 2013 at 3:56 PM

O.k., this is my fourth workout using the fitnessblender beginner routine and I just had to change it up a little: Lauren Brooks uses interval training in her kettlebell wotkouts and I like it much better. So between each exercise I pause the video, take a 40-60 second rest then hit play again. In my experience/research intervals of rest provide a better overall result. Just sayin, in case anyone else wanted to try it a bit different.

Bebe January 10, 2013 at 4:02 PM

One other comment about the fitnessblender workout: the one arm rows… I can’t do them the way they do so I do them the way Lauren demonstrates: with the arm opposite the one rowing the kettlebell resting across the top of that forward lag. Those of you with stronger abs may not have any trouble doing them the way they are demonstrated in the fitnessblender video but if you ARE having difficulty with it try it this way.

Bebe January 10, 2013 at 4:04 PM

forward *leg*

Ruthie January 6, 2013 at 2:02 PM

I sent in my info for the kettlebell challenge yesterday and just want to make sure you received it!! Did my first workout yesterday and man, am I sore!!! It’s a good sore though! :-)

leda January 6, 2013 at 6:26 PM

Hi Anne Marie. Is the Rafflecopter widgit working correctly? I worked out and logged it yesterday, plus got the extra points for following you on FB and for being a newsletter subscriber so I had a total of 30 of 30 points yesterday. Today i worked out again and logged it, (wasnt given the option for the ither extra points, I assume because I already have them) but when my total points were calculated I again had 30 of 30. Since it;s my 2nd workout wouldn’t it be 40 of 40? Do i automatically get the extra 20 points each time i workout since I’ve already sig.ned up for the newsletter? Does the widgit only show points for the day or total points?
Found some great workouts online. Legs already sore…attempting to sit down tomorrow is going to suck. :-)

Ann Marie Michaels January 7, 2013 at 8:00 AM

It’s 10 points to sign up, 10 points for FB, and then it’s 10 points every time you work out.

Leda January 7, 2013 at 7:05 PM

Does it keep a running total.of points? So far I’ve done two workouts, plus extra for newsletter and extra for FB which totals 40 points but the Rafflecopter only said 30.

Greta January 6, 2013 at 9:31 PM

I’m addicted to this kettlebell thing. It is awesome. Thank you for the challenge and introducing me to them.

Jill C January 7, 2013 at 5:26 AM

Just finished my third kettlebell workout, and I was just able to complete the beginner’s workout on fitness blender! I can’t believe that I feel, and AM, stronger already!

Sara January 7, 2013 at 5:58 AM

I am with you Jill C.! It is an incredible feeling completing each workout with greater strength than the one before. Thanks also for the suggestion to look at all of fitness blender’s videos. I’ll have to try them. I am bound and determined that by the end of this challenge I will be able to complete all 10 turkish getups on each side, that are in the video. lol.

Pam January 7, 2013 at 6:15 AM

I don’t log in using Facebook. Can you tell me if you received my entry email? Thanks

sheri January 7, 2013 at 11:00 AM

Just finished my second workout using the fitness blender beginner’s workout and loved it….. much much better than the dvd that came with my kettlebell…could listen to my favorite radio station and calmly work out…good one! Thanks…! I still can’t log in. I am just going let it go. I can post progress here and I think we are not required to, yeah? Just show the results at the end…

jill January 10, 2013 at 8:52 AM

rana Olson January 10, 2013 at 12:33 PM

Is it too late to enter the challange? Me and my husband are interested and obiviosult we will be able to do it for 4 weeks but we are competetive and wanna join, let us know if not too late!

Sara January 10, 2013 at 12:39 PM

I have to say, it’s pretty awesome, I already feel stronger after the first week! I’m not sure if a single inch has changed on my body, but I feel more confident about my body. Here’s to another 4 weeks!

Carrie January 13, 2013 at 7:32 PM

Hoping I’m not too late to enter. I have one workout I’ll have to forfeit–500 reps last Thursday. But tonight I wanted to to catch up on my own personal 10k in 30days challenge, so I did 1200 reps. 200 pass arounds, 600 one handed, and 400 two handed. In addition to a leg workout at the gym and a 5 mile run (and ok, some walking mixed in). Already sore and I am concerned about overtraining, but I’m also a working mom of 3 who REALLY relies on weekends to get my time in.

Sheri January 21, 2013 at 6:45 PM

….had to skip my every other kettle bell workout day today….feels weird, but I have to accept what is…will do it tomorrow and get back on track Wednesday….totally enjoying the challenge!

Kelly Frohnauer February 1, 2013 at 8:47 AM

I just figured out how to log my workouts! I’ve been doing this for almost 4 weeks now and wish I would have figured this out sooner! I will be logging them daily from now on :)
