What I Bought at the Farmer's Market

I missed my usual Saturday morning trip to the farmer’s market since I was out of town, so I made up for it today and yesterday with two trips.

Yesterday afternoon Kate and I went to the Culver City market and this morning we went to the Santa Monica market. The Wednesday morning Santa Monica market is famous for the time when all the chefs shop. I saw a lot of chef whites today.

One thing I’m excited about is the bee pollen. Along with my daily beet kvass, I’ve been drinking a morning superfood tonic of kefir (or raw milk), 1 TBS coconut oil, and 1/2 tsp maca. Now I’m going to that add 1/2 tsp bee pollen.

I also bought some amaranth leaves. I don’t know what I will do with it yet. Probably juice it or sautee it in some bacon or duck fat. Amaranth is one of the most nutritious plants in the world (along with nettles, dandelion, purslane, and lambs quarters). And I bought more purslane. It is my absolute favorite salad green. I crave it every week!

I’ll be going back to the market Saturday to get oysters (for shellfish night), a duck (which I’ll roast on Sunday night), and more eggs. After the market, I’m heading up to the Organic Pastures hub store to buy 10 half-gallons of milk, and some cream and butter — for storage in the freezer. It’s a little bit of a drive up to the hub store (it’s in the valley) but the prices are better.
