Belkin Surge Protector - Unplug and Save Money on Your Electric Bill

This post is a part of Fight Back Friday at Food Renegade. Visit Food Renegade for more ideas and tips from other Real Foodies.

A while back, I posted about how you can save money on your electric bill by unplugging things around your house.

Shortly after I posted that article, I got an email from Belkin, with an offer to send me their super cool Conserve Surge Protector to test out.

It arrived in the mail and I am so excited to set it up! This is going to make it so easy to turn off all our computers and junk in the office. I’m sure this is really going to reduce our electricity bill.

According to Belkin:

  • Most home electronics continue to use energy, even when you’ve turned them off.
  • This wasted energy is called “standby power,” which adds up fast and impacts the environment.
  • Belkin’s Conserve Energy-Saving Surge Protector makes it easy for you to reduce this standby power.

And check this out:

The California Energy Commission estimates standby power losses in the average household to be as much as 15% of household electricity use.

Say you’re spending $100/month on electricity. By unplugging, you could save as much as $15 per month, or $180 per year. That’s more money you could be saving — or spending on real food!

What I’m most excited about is the remote control. You can just mount it on a wall. Then, at the end of the day, when you’re done working, you can simply push one button and turn off all your computers, printers, fax machines, and what-have-you.

Even better, there are two outlets that are for “always on” devices:

With this handy remote control, you can completely shut off the power to devices that consume standby power, such as TVs or computer monitors, when you are done using them. Two “always-on” outlets allow you to leave devices that typically need to stay on, such as set-top boxes or modems.

This way we can unplug our TV, VCR, Playstation, and Wii when we’re not using them — but leave the Tivo on so it can keep recording our shows.

I love it!!!

Here’s the best news of all: Belkin has offered to give away a free Conserve Power Surge Protector to Cheeseslave readers. All you have to do is enter the contest and you can win a Conserve Power Surge Protector — retail value, $49.99.

I would like to win this because it has to be one of the coolest things I have seen in a while. We have power strips all over….too many electronics and I am always saying that we are supposed to unplug things when not using them. But this! This would make it all so easy. Excellent!

I actually wanted to buy one of these awhile back but I just couldn’t afford it. I have a light in my closet plugged into a power strip, so i have to bend over everytime I go in and hit the switch on the floor. Having this would make my life a little bit easier and that’s why I want to win it! :D

After you wrote another post about conserving energy by unplugging, I told my husband, and he jumped on the band wagon. But we have another family living with us in our house, and they don’t always turn things off… I wonder if having an easy off button like this would help make it even easier for them to jump on the band wagon.

Talk about timing…our public utility raised their rates by just over 5 percent in January and with the cold weather here in the Pacific Northwest we managed to log up bills of $199, $156 and God only knows what for March since the first of the year. Not a yawning big house or even kids who forget to turn off the lights…just a two bedroom all electric apartment. So I could really use this one.

Thanks for the giveaway…The power strip I use is mounted behind my desk, next to the wall, between a bookcase; I turn it off when I am not at my desk (desk lamp transformer, computer, cell phone charger, phone, printer, etc.) but it requires me to get on my knees or contort my body in a yoga pose to press the switch. A power strip with a remote would be a welcome addition to my home office, and save me the backache.
