UPDATE: The giveaway is now closed.

Whew! Am I ever busy these past few weeks. It’s been a lot of work prepping for the Weston A. Price conference. I have lots of irons in the fire and am so excited about all the ways I’m going to be helping people in the new year.

One of the things I’m launching is a “menu mailer”. A menu mailer is essentially a cookbook combined with a menu planner and shopping list. It is especially helpful to those of us who cook traditional food. As you all know, it isn’t just opening a can or a box and throwing something in the microwave. It takes planning and preparation. And it is more labor-intensive than when you rely on modern convenience foods.

The menu mailer will be launched December 6, 2009. However, I’m sending out the first mailer on Sunday, November 22 (2 weeks prior to the week listed — to give you time to shop and prepare).

(Thanks to my dear mother-in-law, Nancy, for encouraging me to do this. She’s right about every business instinct she has. I appreciate you, Bubbe! And YES I am including Bubbe’s recipes for chopped liver, latkes and brisket in the December menu mailer, for a Hanukkah menu. Seriously, her chopped liver was the best liver I’ve ever had. Did not taste like liver AT ALL. Truly delicious — I could not stop eating it!)

CHEESESLAVE Menu Mailer Features

Three full dinner menus each week plus 1 dessert or breakfast recipe – I want to throw in some breakfast recipes because we all need more breakfast ideas.

Coupons – I’m working with our Real Food Media sponsors to line up special discounts and coupon codes that you will, as a subscriber, have access to EVERY month.

Weekly shopping guide – Printable guide with your shopping list organized by category

Advance delivery – You’ll receive the menu mailer a full 2 weeks in advance – which will give you plenty of time to shop and even order stuff online, as well as start soaking and sprouting, as needed.

Mostly easy, with some challenging recipes – Most menus will be easy but I’m including one per week that will be a little harder and/or more time/consuming (special occasion or fancier meals like Roast Duck w/ Cherry Sauce or Tacos with Homemade Tortillas).

SUPER nutrient-dense – ALL the meals will be nutrient dense (bone broth/fermented foods/pastured eggs & dairy/unrefined sweeteners/etc.) but up to once per week I will do a super-nutrient dense meal including super foods like liver or other organ meat or shellfish or fish eggs. As Kelly the Kitchen Kop says, “Time to put on your big girl panties!”

Budget-friendly – Most menus will be budget-friendly, with tips on how to save money on ingredients. Some meals will cost more (like holiday meals or shellfish) but I’ll include tips on how to save money on those as well.

Kid-friendly – Most menus are kid-friendly (chicken nuggets, french fries, chili cheese dogs, sprouted flour pizza) but some are more adventurous (things like roasted bone marrow or sushi or Moules a la Mariniere,) to help expand your family’s palette.

Seasonal – Gazpacho soup and pesto pizza in summer and butternut squash soup in fall.

Special holiday menus – I’m planning Christmas (tamales for Christmas Eve, British Prime Rib & Figgy Pudding w/ Hard Sauce for Christmas Eve) & Hanukkah (Bubbe’s famous chopped liver, brisket, and potato latkes with sour cream and apple sauce) as well as Valentine’s Day, Easter & Fourth of July menus.

Regional menus from around the world – French, Italian (Northern and Southern), Spanish, Southern Home Cooking (pulled pork sandwiches & sweet potato fries), Thai, Mediterranean, Creole, TexMex (chili & cornbread), Vietnamese, Japanese (real miso soup from scratch & salmon teriyaki).

Flexible – I’ll include easier options when possible (if you don’t want to or don’t have time to make the corn tortillas, there will also be an option to pick them up at the store).

I am working to make this menu mailer something that will help you create nutrient-dense meals for your family every week.

So are you ready for the giveaway? Let’s go!

I really want to win this! I am a full time working mama with a husband who stays home with our little girl and is going to school/applying to law school at the same time. I am also pregnant, and my husband suffers from severe chronic gastrointestinal disease (Crohn’s) among other ailments. We are striving to eat traditionally (have been for about a year) but time, money, and other stresses always get in our way! I am desperate for the menu planning help, grocery lists, and other tips! Thank you!

I have only recently been learning and trying whole and fermented foods. I work full time in a small health food store so menu planning can be difficult. Your menu planner sounds great. I’m sure I could learn a great deal.
Thanks!

I would love to win the menu mailer because, 1 – I struggle with menu plans that the family will eat, and 2 – my sister has to be very careful about what she eats (think very limited grains, no sweeteners and no dairy products) and she is always looking for simple meals that help her best.

BTW, thanks for the chicken feet pics and the help Saturday evening on twitter (@OneBigAdventure). I bagged 120+ on Sunday morning and put them in the freezer.

Hi Anne Marie,

I have been making small changes in the way our family eats for about 2 years now. It’s been slow but sure… kind of like turning a huge cruise liner. I would have crashed and jumped overboard if I had tried to turn us around too quickly so it’s been good…slowly sneaking food, drinks, and information to my sweet family friends. I feel like recently, though, I’ve stalled. With six kids, soccer season and a husband who travels, I resorted to eating out 2 times per week…mostly Pizza and Noodles and Company. I just can’t do that anymore…for our health and our budget. I need a good kick in the pants in the right direction. I think your menu mailer would be the perfect kick! Also, I not only need to cook more often, but I also need to put on my big girl knickers and try some new, nutrient-dense foods…like liver…ugghh…I’ll try….for the kids’ sake. Thanks for all that you do for us!

Your blog has so many practical hints/tips/recipes, and this mailer is a great idea. I hope the mailer is a big success, and that you go on to publish a book — it would be a big help to have as a “next step” after reading NT. I hope I win:)

One last thing: this is off topic, but I’ve been putting turmeric into my bone broth when it cooks, and you can’t even taste it in the final soup (I also think it adds a nice yellow color, but some cooks may not like it because it is very brightly colored). It’s a great way to add an immunity-enhancing spice.

Hello AM,

I have been following your updates for your blog and RSS feeds for a while now. Also been following you on Twitter and subsequently ‘Friended’ you on Facebook. I have Twittered this post several times, and updated my Facebook status with this post about the menu mailer giveaway. I have also provided a link and brief statement on my Facebook page. Just a few minutes ago I e-mailed more than 5 friends and family (couldn’t leave my mother out) about this giveaway, as I know a few of them could really use the menu ideas and the time allowance to shop for said ingredients.

I have just signed up for StumbleUpon (as it will be a great tool to use with my blog), and the first thing I did was subscribe to you and Stumble Cheeseslave. My name on there is nourishedcanuck.

I will be writing a post on my blog in the next few days regarding how to adapt to traditional foods, and this giveaway of yours will be a major topic and reference for the article. This will be the relaunch of my blog – new name!

I really would love to win this mailer as I am a student/working part-time, who is trying to feed myself and a partner who is also attending school and suffers from low energy and depression. This past year I have slowly integrated traditional foods more and more – a big step was becoming a member of the cowshare to buy raw milk; and another was joining a CSA for meat and eggs from pasture based animals. Both had struggles at first because of the upfront cost, but I managed and worked my butt off to get these great foods. They have already

I struggle a lot with making sure my meals are as nutritious as possible on a regular basis because of time constraints, and a menu planner would be an amazing tool to ensure that we are both getting adequate nutrition to sustain us through lots of schooling, and health issues.

I have also been spreading the word of Weston A Price Foundation goals, and have championed issues of traditional foods. This is a passion of mine and would be great to make sure I am following my own ideals each day to let people know its possible and they have choices – not just the supermarket shelves “Pay Less, Get More”.

Thank you so much for this opportunity and see you this coming week!

I would like to win because the menu plans would help me help my husband prepare the meals. My disbility keeps me from being able to prepare all the meals. My husband does that, but he does not understand about cooking the traditional way. If it were all planned out for him, made easy for him, then I (we) could have some very wholesome meals to help me heal.

Mary Przybyla November 10, 2009 at 12:07 PM

I could really use help in menu planning and preparation with nutritional foods. I have not been very adventurous over the years which has limited my choices, so I am ready to branch out and learn.

Wow, thanks to everyone for entering! I’m SO excited about this. And thrilled that so many people out there are excited about eating healthier.

And even MORE thrilled that so many people out there understand that eating healthy means butter, cream, beef heart and bone marrow. LOL! You guys ROCK!

I said to my housekeeper yesterday, who comes from Honduras and grew up eating a traditional diet, “Look how many people want to learn to cook tongue!” (She grew up making Tacos de Lengua.) She laughed and said she was just telling one of her family members about me and all the things I eat and they said, “She’s American??”

I wanted to let you know that I am planning on offering a more expanded version of the menu mailer — 6 meals per week instead of just 3. So for those of you who want that, I will make it easy for you to upgrade when I’m ready with that version (soon!).

After 25 years in the restaurant business (retiring after 9/11 wiped 40% of the independent operators off the map) and seeing just what goes into the plates and people who eat from them, the move toward a more natural and unaffected pantry is both welcome and a tad intimidating.

I know how to plan a menu, whether it’s for 4 or 400 – finding sources of wholesome, unadulterated foods among the deceptive and vaguely-monikered imposters is a bit more daunting. A template of what to look for, how to mix ‘n’ match, what stores well, what doesn’t and all that would be wonderfully helpful in transitioning over to a non-industrial diet.

In the 6 months since I’ve begun to avoid margarine (read: plastic), rancid oils and grain-fed anything, I’ve lost 30 pounds and my family is beginning to think there just may be a human under all the snarling and grumbling that usually came after a day. I’d like to include them on this little trip – they’re actualy warming to the idea of no more snacks that come out of wrappers at room temp – but since I work 1-and-a-half jobs and the missus works another, well, you get the idea.

Anyway – I’m pretty sure I subscribe (went there today and it looked familiar . . . and I really, really hate being redundant) and if I had more of my brain with me I’d know. Probably due to years of trans-fat buildup in the cerebellum.

So, thanks for the consideration. I and mine would be obliged to sing your praises from the rooftops (until the HOA writes us a letter) should we be so graced.

PS – I emailed 5 co-workers, including our HR director, since our company is currently doing a “Biggest (Healthiest) Loser” program. 300 people signed up and so far, after 5 weeks, over 1800 lbs. have been cumulatively shed. I lost all mine before the program started (therefore I am inspiration) but I send them as much natural-foods info as I can find, and it seems they actually incorporate it into their twice-weekly sessions. How ’bout that?

Hello, I would love to win the weekly planner. I have been following the WAP way of life for nearly seven years and still have not gotten the knack of preparing ahead. With four children, homeschooling, having our own animals, a large garden, and all the other things that make up my life plus growing up on fast and conivent foods, it has been really hard to learn to cook and then implement WAP. Thank you for all you do to help us out here.

I would love to win this because I am really overwhelmed with cooking. I have chosen to cook for my family, but I have a day job, too. I have already used some of your recipes. Next one to try is fried clams.
Thank you for all these good things on your blog.

What a great idea! This could be so helpful to all of us out there who live and teach these concepts and traditions but sometimes run out of time to plan our own good meals! I’m so glad you’re doing this!

I’ve been subscribed to Cheeseslave (via google reader) for quite awhile and just tweeted about you! I’d like to win b/c I’ve gotten off my whole foods wagon recently with 2 moves in 4 months, a 14 month old and a veggie- and lacto-fermentation-resistant husband. I need some help with planning and organizing!
