Mother’s Day Giveaway: Win a Copy of Real Food for Mother & Baby

This post is a part of Fight Back Friday at Food Renegade. Visit Food Renegade for more ideas and tips from other Real Foodies.

Happy Mother’s Day! To celebrate Mother’s Day, I’m giving away 3 copies of Nina Planck’s wonderful new book, Real Food For Mother and Baby.

Nina Planck, one of the great food activists, changed the way we view old-fashioned foods like butter with her groundbreaking Real Food. Then she got pregnant. Never one to accept conventional wisdom blindly, Nina found the usual advice about pregnancy and baby food riddled with myths and misunderstandings. In Real Food for Mother and Baby, Nina explains why many modern ideas about pregnancy and infant nutrition are wrongheaded and why traditional foods are best. While Nina can be controversial—her op-ed in the New York Times on vegan diets for infants was one of the paper’s most e-mailed articles— she’s no contrarian. Readers applaud her candor; they also trust her research and welcome her advice.

Nina’s basic premise hasn’t changed—whole foods are best—but some of the details are surprising. Pregnant women need meat and salt, not iron supplements. Nursing will be easier if you act like the mammal you are. Delaying the introduction of certain solid foods doesn’t prevent allergies. Cereals are not the best foods for tiny eaters; meat and egg yolks are better. From conception to two years, the body’s overwhelming needs are for quality fat and protein, not for carrots and low-fat dairy. Even as she casts a skeptical eye on the conventional wisdom, Nina is reassuring. She shows you how to keep your baby healthy on good, simple food. Real Food for Mother and Baby will be the new classic on eating for two.

I’d love to read this book as I am currently trying to conceive. After major surgery last summer for endometriosis and countless books with confusing/conflicting dietary advice as well as a miscarriage in February, this book could help me make sure I’m boosting my fertility even more than I currently am. I am working on a PhD and don’t have much time for extra reading or money for book shopping, but would really appreciate this book and read it thoroughly.

i don’t need a copy as i have one already and have read it cover to cover, soaking it all in. I just wanted to put my plug in for this great book, Nina’s writing is accessable, frank and funny and I enjoyed both her books very much. Also i appreciate that even those unfimilar to Traditional Foods or Weston A. Price’s research might take some of her suggestions to heart and change their diet’s for the better.

I bumped into Cheeseslave by searching for methods to soak corn and I have absolutely FALLEN in love with the eating principles. It’s fabulous to have everything organized in one spot. While I am not new to organic eating, I am a newbie to raw milk, fermented foods, as well as to raw, whole foods. I would really love to win a copy of the book because I am always concerned with what I am feeding my two-year-old son . . . and my husband as well. :)

I have done everything outlined above EXCEPT for blogging about it as I do not currently have an active blog. :(

Happy Mother’s Day! :)

First of all, I’d like to thank you for doing this.
I always thought of myself as somebody healthy – meaning healthy organic food according to most people’s beliefs.
I’ve self diagnosed a gluten intolerance 2 years ago and have switch to a gluten free diet. I’ve been on a journey to true health and on a quest for truth for the past 2 years. Nourishing and healing food traditions are the way to go!
I haven’t experienced the joys of motherhood yet but it is something that I plan to experience soon. “Real food for mother & baby” is already on my list of books to ready prior to, during and after my future pregnancy ;) .

I would LOVE a copy of this book. My son is 8 months and just starting to explore solids. It seems like the most traditional thing to do is to continue with bf’ing but I personally don’t have a problem introducing solids at this point, I’m just not sure what or how. Most of the commercially available finger foods (gerber puffs, etc) are full of hydrogenated oils, soy, and all sorts of other bad stuff.
