No GMO Challenge: Bacteria and Viruses and Super Weeds, Oh My!

No GMO Challenge

This post is a part of the blog carnival for the No GMO Challenge. Please visit the No GMO Challenge blog for more stories about GMOs and other people who are doing the No GMO Challenge and their experiences of avoiding GM foods.

Most people don’t know what GM foods are, or what genetically modified means. But up to 75% of the foods in the supermarket contain GMOs or genetically modified organisms. Which is why we are doing this No GMO Challenge.

It’s not just about avoiding GMOs for 30 days — it’s about spreading the word about what GM crops are, why they are grown, who is growing them, which foods they are made into, and what the health risks and environmental dangers are.

I found this great video on YourNetwork.tv about GMOs that I want to share with you. It covers lots of neat stuff. Like tumors in plants. Injecting bacteria and viruses into cells. Super weeds. Monarch butterflies dying from eating GM pollen. And an interview with Megan Thompson, Executive Director of the Non-GMO Project.

I think they did a great job on this video. It’s longer than most videos I post but it’s really worth watching.

Some key points:

  • Cornell University did a study and found that the BT toxin released from the crops is lethal to monarch butterflies.
  • Experiments performed on other animals resulted in pre-cancerous cell growth, smaller brains, livers and testicles, damaged immune systems, liver malfunctions, lesions in the liver, stomach and kidneys, inflammation of certain organs, cell malfunctions, higher blood sugar levels, fertility problems, and unexplained increases in death rates.
  • In the Philippines, people living next to a GE cornfield developed recurring skin, respiratory and intestinal problems. Blood tests done on 39 of the Filipino residents revealed that their immune systems had been compromised by the BT toxin.

Click here to go to the site and read the transcript, peruse the scientific studies, and learn about actions you can take to help stop GMOs. You can also share the video on email, Facebook or your blog. Help spread the word and educate your friends and family.

Don’t forget to head over to the No GMO Challenge blog carnival for more stories about GMOs and other people who are doing the No GMO Challenge and their experiences of avoiding GM foods.

As a society, we seem dead set on poisoning ourselves! I believe the EU bans GMO foods (good for them!) but that apparently hasn’t stopped the WTO from declaring the ban illegal at one point (in 2007 I believe) and Monsanto from suing Germany over it’s ban of GMO corn. It’s too bad our government doesn’t seem to be willing or able to stand up to these large corporations and organizations. As we spread the word, hopefully our leaders will get the message!

I totally agree. We do seem to be set on poisoning ourselves. WE need to stand up to corporations along with the government. It is awful that the government provides so much support for them.

… the Almighty Dollar rules, doesn’t it?
I’m growing increasingly frustrated with the extent to which the US seems to place Capitalism over and above Public Health. This is just one example.

All the more reason to stand up and be counted when it comes to our grocery-spending dollars!

BTW – Your website is what spurred me on to may huge changes in my family’s eating. We use coconut oil, drink raw milk, buy organic fruits and veggies, eat grass-fed beef, etc. My pantry and refrigerator have been totally revamped. I am so excited because just this weekend, I found eggs – good, wholesome, delicious eggs – from a local farmer at the farmer’s market. You should have seen my dance of joy and huge smile. My husband couldn’t believe my excitement. I can’t wait to return next week for some wonderful local goodies. Thank you so much for taking the time to share what you have learned so the rest of us can make smart healthy choices for our families.

Unlabled GMO food cause allergies that are undiagnosed like Morgellons.

Hi, after reading through this little article I just wanted to correct something. The fear of butterflies dying is no longer a problem. The seed which caused this was removed from the market a while before it was even released to the public. Also the parrt about how labratory animals developed blah, blah, blah, etc, etc what is exactly your proof for that? I know there have been around two cases like this. But these things were done in the late 80s early 90s and the experiments were primitive at best. The point about the Filipinos: GMOs such as Bt corn have increased they standard of living for the farmers that have planted them. They’ve increased yields, an increase that was unabtainable before.

This whole “No GMO Challenge” Thing is fine when you can show proof of what you claim.

PS your Cornell study showed that this poison killed Monarchs when the pollen of the Bt corn was eaten in 10-15x the normal amount. An amount not probable in the wild

@Alice Rubin
How is something that is undiagnosed caused by GMOs?

@ Vasquez

A December 2009 study found “adverse impacts on kidneys and liver, the dietary detoxifying organs, as well as different levels of damages to heart, adrenal glands, spleen and haematopoietic system.”

I just wanted to comment on the comment above where the poster said the problem in this country was “Capitalism” is more important than “Public Health”.

People (and the media as well) need to understand that the problem is not Capitalism but rather Fascism where government colludes with BIG CORPORATIONS like Monsanto and Cargill that ends up giving them an unfair advantage over smaller businesses which, results in laws being passed to force, in the case of Monsanto, farmers to do business with them and if they don’t comply, these BIG corporations have such power, that the smaller vendors can easily go out of business. It is completely unethical!

The way to stop it from continuing is to get some good people in Washington DC for a change. Conventional Democrats and Republicans are nothing more than puppets. They are two flavors of Vanilla and need to be replaced by HONEST candidates like Congressman Ron Paul who actually CARE about the country and their constituents.

We now know that the genetically rabid crops are extremely dangerous for human consumption.
The “AGROBACTERIUM” is deadly.

The process called Ti plasmid induction merits the highest order of investigation.
