It’s that time again — Real Food Wednesday. This week our theme is Growing Real Food — What Are You Planting?
I posted what I have growing here. It’s a lot of stuff — strawberries, fennel, potatoes, sorrel, blood oranges and Meyer lemons… just to name a few. And I’ve barely done any work so far this year. With the exception of the starters I planted in January, most of these plants either lasted through the winter or they just came back.

Nobody likes weeding. Garden weeds are a menace. Instead of using a toxic pesticide like Roundup weed killer, why not try a more natural approach and go with organic lawn care? This small goat farm in Tennessee has a solution: rent a goat to do your weeding for you!
From Hidden Springs Farms just north of [...]

Here are some photos I took last weekend when Kate and I were gardening. We’ve been having gorgeous weather — in the 70s and 80s all week. We planted lettuce, thyme, mint, dandelion, shallots, garlic, onion, peas, dill, and fennel.
I love growing all these herbs and lettuce in the backyard. It is so great [...]

My friend Annie started this awesome container garden — in a common area in her apartment building in Santa Monica. She’s growing a whole array of things — from pumpkins to raspberries.
Even if you think you don’t have room to start a garden, be creative — you can do it!

Don’t you love how much you appreciate being home after you’ve taken a trip? Don’t you love how much you appreciate your life after having been away from it for a while?
We just got back and we are relaxing with a fan blowing and all the windows open. And watching Muzzy (our favorite show).
I was [...]

I joined the Growing Challenge a while ago. As part of the Growing Challenge, I’m supposed to increase the number of fruits or vegetables I am growing (from last year), and I’m supposed to grow them from seed.
I did that. However, I’m also supposed to post about gardening once a week. I have not kept [...]

Kate is sleeping so I’m taking a break for once. It occurred to me that I need to take breaks when she is napping.
We get up at 6 or 6:30 am every day. And she doesn’t go to bed until 7. So that’s a 12-13 hour day! Plus then I still have to get dinner [...]

It’s going to be a busy day. Heck, it’s been a busy day already.
Kate and I got up at 6:30. She had her bottle, I had my Dandy Blend, and then I got dressed and made breakfast while she watched Muzzy. We got to the farmer’s market a little after it opened (around 8:45) and [...]

Just got back from the farmer’s market.
Here are the meals I’m going to make this week (not in any particular order, although I know we are doing ribs tonight and brisket tomorrow night):
BBQ Pork Spare Ribs with Beet Greens sauteed in chicken fat, tomato and cucumber salad — and broth
Brisket with Sauerkraut and some vegetables [...]

I was gathering Italian parsley and oregano for my spaghetti sauce tonight, and I was thinking, “There isn’t anything better than this. Being able to just step outside and gather herbs for your dinner.”
Then I realized there is one thing that is better. And that’s the first seedlings of spring.
I was so excited to find [...]
