Many farm fresh foodies and locavores have experienced the frustration of trying to encourage our families and friends to support local farms. A few cotton to the idea, but many do not. Rather than alienating my close friends and relations by becoming a noodge, I decided to focus on delivering the good news of a healthier way to eat on folks I hadn’t yet met.

I was delighted to catch the new documentary, FRESH, by Ana Sophia Joanes at the Newport Beach film festival last month. FRESH is a movie about modern food production and supply, how messed up it is, the ramifications of industrial agriculture, and what we need to do to fix it. This is a must-see, folks. Absolutely do not miss this movie. Not only is the film informative and captivating, it’s so emotionally powerful I was moved to tears more than once (okay, let’s be honest, my cheeks were wet throughout).

I’ve never been a sports fan. I’d rather have twelve root canals than have to suffer through a football game. Going tailgaiting is my idea of hell.
Maybe this is why I didn’t get along so well with certain boyfriends I had in the past. Their lives completely revolved around sports. They breathlessly awaited Opening Day [...]

I’m so excited I can hardly stand it! In less than a week, my dear friend and fellow blogger, Kelly the Kitchen Kop is flying to Southern California and we are going to go to the beach! I don’t know about you, but I’ve always found it very interesting that the word “easter” is derived from the Latin, “estres,” which means the period of reproduction in animals. Perhaps this is why Easter is about eggs and baby chicks and baby lambs and bunnies. It’s the time to get out there and plant seeds. After a cold, dark winter, new life shoots out of the ground, and baby animals are born on the farm.

For years, I drank 2% milk. Just regular old milk from the supermarket. Then I switched to organic 2% milk. wanted to avoid bovine growth hormones and pesticides and genetically modified organisms (GMOs). When I got pregnant, I switched to organic whole milk. I figured I needed the extra fat for my growing baby.
After Baby [...]

California voters go to the polls tomorrow to vote on a slew of propositions, including Proposition 2.
It is cruel and inhumane to confine animals in cages so small they can’t turn around or stretch their limbs. All animals deserve humane treatment, including those raised for food. Vote YES on Prop #2 to protect animals [...]

Last night was Shellfish Night.
We try to eat shellfish or organ meats at least once a week because they are so chock-full of vitamins. Seriously, folks, they put veggies to shame.
It would take just over a quarter pound of beef per day to fulfill the minimum requirement for zinc, yet a single serving of [...]
