I was delighted to catch the new documentary, FRESH, by Ana Sophia Joanes at the Newport Beach film festival last month. FRESH is a movie about modern food production and supply, how messed up it is, the ramifications of industrial agriculture, and what we need to do to fix it. This is a must-see, folks. Absolutely do not miss this movie. Not only is the film informative and captivating, it’s so emotionally powerful I was moved to tears more than once (okay, let’s be honest, my cheeks were wet throughout).

I don’t know about you, but I’ve always found it very interesting that the word “easter” is derived from the Latin, “estres,” which means the period of reproduction in animals. Perhaps this is why Easter is about eggs and baby chicks and baby lambs and bunnies. It’s the time to get out there and plant seeds. After a cold, dark winter, new life shoots out of the ground, and baby animals are born on the farm.

If you read my blog regularly, you know I love eggs. We typically go through about 3-4 dozen eggs per week. Our little family consisting of 2 adults and one toddler. Eggs are one of the most economical ways to increase the nutrients in your family’s diet. Eggs are full of vitamin D, vitamin A, vitamin E, omega 3 fatty acids, beta carotene, cholesterol (which is good for you), and saturated fat (also good for you). Why Pastured Eggs? I don’t just buy any eggs. I only buy pastured eggs from local farmers who keep their chickens outdoors and let them roam around in the sun, eating bugs.

I was just listening to Michael Pollan on the Everyday Foods show on Martha Stewart’s channel on Sirius radio. I am really loving his book The Omnivore’s Dilemma so I was excited to hear him on the radio. However, I completely disagreed with him! A woman called in and asked about feeding whole milk to [...]

“Cage free” is a trick. I only learned this recently. I have been buying “cage free” eggs and poultry for years. Only to find that it's another agribusiness inside joke. JUST LOOK at this photo: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/12/us/12eggs.html?ei=5070&en=0eb31962f04ee376&ex=1187582400&adxnnl=1&emc=eta1&adxnnlx=1194412364-x0kTs0fwTyz9IEGEzvTUwA Truly disgusting. They can say they are cage free — but this is what it looks like. The term [...]
